RECOGNIZING A GOOD BREEDER

Responsible breeders will plan a litter very carefully, strive to improve the breed and hope to leave it a little better then when they came into it. We had some very good breeders over the years and some disappointments as well. It is important to check all aspects of your breeding stocks health and ascertain that the health and temperament of the dogs you intend to bring into your line is sound. Many of our breeders have at great expense, repeatetly imported from overseas to improve their lines. Money should not be the deciding factor in a breeding program and using a dog because it is cheap is irresponsible. If you are going to breed this wonderful breed, then do your homework. Don't buy a bitch and decide that you are a breeder, it does not work that way.

Genuine breeders show their dogs in competitive shows, meaning they will show where a good entry of the breed can be expected. Showing your Great Dane is submitting your breeding stock to be assessed by qualified judges. Breeding without showing is not for the betterment of the breed, it is all about making money out of an investment, the Great Dane. Excuses, like I don't have time to show or it is too expensive, are only excuses. If you do not have time to show, you also do not have time to breed. Breeding a litter is very time consuming, expensive and if you are a conscientious breeder, it will be a 24 hour commitment for several weeks.

A good breeder will thoroughly check the suitability of the potential purchaser of a Great Dane puppy and may not sell a puppy if there are doubts. They are a giant breed and are not suitable for everybody. The breeder must not let a puppy under eight weeks of age go to its new home. The puppies new owner must be issued with written feeding/rearing instructions, vaccination certificates, microchip papers, registration certificates (full or limited) if it is a registered puppy. A good breeder will always be there to help the owners of their puppies and guide them.

TAKE YOUR TIME

If after thorough research you have decided that a Great Dane is to be your 'Best Friend', it is time to find the right breeder. To start off, it would be advisable to visit one or two of the bigger dog shows. You will be able to talk to breeders, ask questions, look at the dogs, see the different colours and get a better impression of what you might prefer. Shows with a good representation of the breed are at Easter, July, August and November. Dogs NSW (02 98343022) and the Secretary of our Club will be able to give you dates for these shows.

Dogs NSW and www.dogzonline.com have extensive listings of breeders. Listings with any form of media does not necessarily convey a recommendation, these are paid advertisements and can only be treated as such.

LET THE BUYER BEWARE.
